Altona North ELC

Crosier Scott’s ambition for this new learning facility was to ensure that the building would be able to accommodate a new and innovative early learning program.

Our concept creates flexible general purpose learning areas and a large space designed for assembly and gathering as well as collaboration between classes. The general purpose learning areas each have direct access to dedicated and covered external learning spaces, allowing the traditional classroom to become a flexible learning space and bridge between the macro and micro functions of the facility. This flexibility allows infinite options for teaching staff to explore changing pedagogical requirements.

The new building is sympathetic to the residential character of the area. Materials were chosen to be practical, robust and complementary to the surrounding palette. Corrugated iron is softened by incorporating variations in tone, with strong vertical accents creating perspective. Pitched ceilings bring light and create interest in the form as well as sustainably purging hot air from the space
