Maryborough Avenue Kindergarten was chosen as one of three sites within the City of Darebin’s 3-year old expansion program. The centre is a stand alone facility with one indoor kindergarten space that required expansion for the centre to provide the new funded 3 year old kindergarten program and additional placements.

The proposed alterations and additions were designed to not only provide a large new play room, and updated facilities but to also be in keeping with its residential location and connect to the primary school interface across the road. The proposed new interventions were designed to ensure the Kindergarten could keep operating during the construction period if required.

The new play room allows for 33 new placements and is a multi purpose space that is designed to also function as a welcoming and user friendly community space. The light and airy central foyer adjoins the existing play room to the new play room with a large external canopy, operable louvred windows, engaging colours and custom joinery.

The existing play room and toilets were reconfigured to enable another 6 placements within the same footprint, improving visibility and supervision of children and and bringing the total number of placements at the centre from 27 to 66 which will create a more viable and functional centre for the community and the City of Darebin. New toilet facilities, re-engergised outdoor play areas and on site car parking facilities complete the renewal works.

This project is expected to commence on site in 2023-2024.
